Search Knox County Civil Docket

Start with the right court, because Knox County splits its civil cases across several divisions. Small claims, evictions, and other local limited-civil matters sit in Municipal Court. Bigger civil disputes run through Common Pleas, and Domestic Relations and probate each keep their own divisions. A Knox County civil docket search by name or case number can pull up case information, though not every filed document shows up online. Pick the correct level first. Then use the proper public portal, and call the record keeper when a hearing, case, or copy needs to be verified.

Knox County Civil Docket Threshold

The amount in controversy decides where a Knox County civil case belongs. Mount Vernon Municipal Court states that its limited civil jurisdiction tops out at $15,000. Small claims carry a lower cap of $6,000. Above $15,000, things change. The Knox County Court of Common Pleas General Division holds original jurisdiction over the civil matter. Know that dollar line before choosing a docket portal. It usually points you to the right search.

Inside a Knox County Civil Docket

A civil docket is the running court record for an action. Under R.C. 2303.12, a Common Pleas case file holds pleadings, motions, orders, and judgments. That statute describes the file itself, not what any portal displays. Expect that some documents, fields, or images may not be visible online. Ask the Clerk when the full file matters.

Case numberThe court's identifier for returning to the right civil case; no exact Municipal civil example was captured.
PartiesThe plaintiff or defendant names used to locate a Municipal civil matter, subject to portal and restriction limits.
Case informationThe public search layer or summary, not the same thing as a certified court record.
Setting or notice of hearingAn assigned date and time that should be checked through the court's schedule channel.
Filed case documentsPleadings, motions, orders, and judgments that may have separate access rules or availability.

Read a dismissal, judgment, or transfer in the context of the whole court record. The exact wording of online captions in Knox County can vary, so do not assume a short code means what you think. When the language of an entry matters, ask the Clerk or the Court to verify the current case status.

Knox County Civil Lookup Fields

Authority Web Connect uses a different form for civil matters than for Traffic/Criminal cases. The Civil Case Lookup offers a method menu, a search-text field, and a Lookup button. It publishes no civil case-number example. There are no case-type or status filters, no date filter, and no export function. Respect those limits rather than borrowing instructions from some other portal.

The Municipal Civil Schedule Query is the separate route for hearing dates. A Civil Case Lookup answers a different question than a schedule query. Confirm any date through the schedule tool or the Court itself.

Civil Case Types on the Docket

The Municipal Court Civil Division covers several kinds of matters. These include money recovery, personal injury, property damage, contract, and eviction cases within its jurisdiction. It also offers resources for eviction, small claims, rent escrow, and self-represented litigants. The Common Pleas General Division takes the larger civil tier. Domestic Relations is its own Common Pleas division. Probate belongs to the Probate Court. Those divisions control which portal or clerk can confirm a record.

  • Contract and money-recovery matters within Municipal Court jurisdiction.
  • Personal-injury and property-damage matters within the Municipal limit.
  • Eviction and forcible-entry-and-detainer cases in Municipal Court.
  • Small claims up to the stated $6,000 cap.
  • General Division civil matters over $15,000.
  • Domestic Relations and probate matters in their own divisions.

A transcript is not the same thing as a Clerk photocopy. Court reporters and the Clerk are separate offices. Note that Juvenile transcript preparation requires satisfactory payment arrangements. So name the exact record you need before asking either office for a copy.

Knox County Civil Docket Volume

The Mount Vernon Municipal Court annual report gives hard numbers for the county's limited-civil workload in 2025. It recorded 1,196 contract cases, 10 personal-injury cases, 57 other civil, transfer, and BMV cases, 156 forcible-entry-and-detainer cases, and 25 small claims. Add the categories and you get 1,444 non-traffic civil-related filings. Those figures show the docket's scale, not the merit or outcome of any single case.

156forcible-entry-and-detainer cases
25small-claims cases

Per the report, contracts and other civil filings grew from 2021 through 2025 while small claims held fairly stable. That mix makes the Municipal Civil Lookup a natural first stop for many Knox County civil searches, though not all of them.

Civil Docket Settings and Hearings

A civil case in Knox County rarely stands still. It can run from a complaint or petition to service, an answer, motions and discovery, then a hearing or trial setting, a judgment or dismissal. Sometimes it ends in post-judgment enforcement or an appeal. That is the broad local path. It does not mean Authority Web Connect or CourtView labels each event the same way on a docket.

Need a Municipal civil date? Use the separate Civil Schedule Query once the case is in hand. For Common Pleas, pull the CourtView case information first. Then confirm the setting with the Court or the assignment contact. The Clerk of Courts remains the records fallback. The Common Pleas Court lists 740-393-6777, and the Clerk lists 740-393-6788. What CourtView offers past its CAPTCHA, the court itself can explain.

One caution about any court docket date. A continuance can move a setting. So the newest word from the court that owns the civil case beats an old portal view every time.

Knox County CourtView Civil Access

The Knox County Clerk runs a portal. Its formal name is the Knox County Common Pleas Public Records Search and E-Filing Portal. The landing page offers Home, eFile, and Log on buttons. A CAPTCHA also stands between the visitor and the public-record search. Beyond that gate, the portal may offer a name field, a case-number box, party filters, and document lists. The public page does not describe them, so plan on finding out once you clear the CAPTCHA.

The CourtView entry carries one warning worth noting. A filer must strip metadata from documents before filing. Whatever metadata remains can become public record. That is why a filed document, a docket entry, and a public case-information result are related but not identical ways to see a case. For a known case, the Knox County case lookup gives the fuller route into the search process.

Need an ordinary or certified copy from Common Pleas? Contact the Clerk of Courts at 117 East High Street, Suite 201, Mount Vernon, or call 740-393-6788. Email works too: clerkofcourts@knoxcounty.oh.gov. Mailing steps, turnaround times, and any identity requirements are not spelled out, so ask the office directly.

Civil Docket Access Rules

Civil Docket Access Rules. Ohio treats court records as public, for the most part. The old citation for that rule set was Sup.R. 44 through 47. The numbering has been reorganized, so verify the current rule numbers before relying on the old ones. R.C. 2303.12 governs how the Common Pleas clerk keeps records. It also sets what general-docket information and documents can go online. It carves out restricted records, along with certain domestic-relations and juvenile exceptions. R.C. 149.43 is Ohio's Public Records Act. Courts also follow their own specialized judicial access rules.

Local civil record point: A portal case result can help identify the court and case number, but a certified record must come from the court or clerk that maintains the file.

Restrictions, personal identifiers, sealed material, and some domestic-relations information can limit what is visible online or copied.

The Common Pleas fee schedule from September 2025 lists $0.10 per photocopy page and $1 for certification. That is not a blanket rule for every court, document, or delivery method in Knox County. Municipal Court sets its own copy policies.

Knox County Civil Record Boundaries

Probate records form a separate Knox County layer. Probate CaseLook greets users with an agreement screen. It warns that postings can lag filings or judicial action by at least 24 hours, sometimes longer. Need verified Probate information? The Court directs you to send a request or visit during regular hours. Do not assume Probate matters surface in the Municipal civil lookup or the CourtView General Division search.

For civil jurisdiction limits, the official Mount Vernon Municipal Court Civil Division page states what that court may hear. That includes its small-claims reach.

The Civil Division page supports the limited-jurisdiction and small-claims routing. Even so, case-result fields stay limited to whatever the portal itself exposes. For Probate copy charges, the Knox Probate Court costs page lists the fees.

Knox County probate record fees marking a separate civil docket access channel

Probate charges $50 for authenticated copies plus exhibit-page charges, and $3 for exemplified copies plus the same per-page costs. Those are Probate fees alone, not Municipal or Common Pleas civil-copy rates.
